Valentine's Day For Singles

Being ‘single’ on Valentine’s Day seems to be almost a bad word! While researching for this article, I searched Valentine’s Day for singles on Google and it was not a pretty sight! Be it completely ridiculous concepts like ’Singles Awareness Day’ acronym – S.A.D. (sigh) or to go as far as there being a deluge of ‘survival guides’ for singles on V-Day, I realized that being single on 14th February is really made out to be a bigger deal than it is! Valentine’s day, our biggest import from Christianity, is just a day about love! (And honestly, not half as much fun as Holi, our desi Valentine’s Day). Why should it be something one has to ‘survive’? So with absolutely no pity on the platter, let me dish out some fun ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day, sans a Valentine.

Valentine's Day For Singles

Spend the day with your biggest crush!

Clark Gable, George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Leonardo di Caprio, Shammi Kapoor, Dev Anand, Ranbir Kapoor or Maryln Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Suchitra Sen, Rekha, Madhubala and Deepika Padukone, forget about your ex or your quest for the ideal partner. This Valentine’s Day celebrate by enjoying a movie marathon with your all time love. Here’s a list of some all-time romantic movies that you might want to watch again.

Or if reading and poetry is what you love, instead of reading sugar-dipped messages by lovebirds on Twitter and FB, go back to your favourite book or poems by Neruda, Byron and Frost and spend a quiet and blissful evening with their magical verses.

Take a long weekend off

14th Feb happens to be a Friday this year and, while watching colleagues at work go all gaga over their ‘surprise’ gifts and flowers can be entertaining, do yourself a favour and take time off for a quick weekend getaway. Just make sure the standard romantic destinations like Goa, Udaipur, Shimla and Leh are way off the list! Instead, try out wildlife parks or adventure sports destinations like Bandhavgarh, Ranthambore and Rishikesh. If you are in the mood for some retail therapy, one of the shopping paradises close to your city could also be a good choice!

Treat yourself to what you would have loved

This is something we did back in college. After helping our ‘much in love’ friends choose their dresses for their ‘big dates’, we decided to have some fun ourselves and do the things we would have loved! So we decided to fulfill one romantic wish each one of us had, like having a pizza boy deliver roses and pizza or singing for a friend in the metro. The idea of Valentine’s Day is to have a great time. Love yourself, treat yourself to the spa, enjoy some fine-dining with friends and family or just gift yourself a holiday.

Do what you wouldn’t have done otherwise

Not being in a relationship can be blessing in disguise because on V-day you can actually do something you love, instead of what your partner may want to do! February is such a beautiful time of the year! Go explore your city this Valentine’s Day and fall in love with it again. Visit your favourite street food joint, spend quality time with yourself at a favourite spot in the city or take a trip to the local theatre. Take time off from ‘life’ and do what you love – because everyone else is too busy doing what they love!

Go celebrate this day of love, which can be beautiful, even without an excess of only red colour, roses and chocolates and then look forward to Holi, which is right round the corner!
