My trip to Edinburgh took off in a hurry with most arrangements made at the last moment. But, right from the time I set foot in Edinburgh, my face lit up and I threw caution to the wind…all set to explore every little nook and corner of this attractive city. I was in one of the most fascinating cities in the world and I was smitten from day one! A snapshot of some of the things I enjoyed doing in Edinburgh are listed below, and others are part of my to-do list for next time. Yes, it’s that good.

Climb Arthur’s Seat
Arthur’s SeView from Arthur's Seatat is a must-do when in Edinburgh. Climb up to this extinct volcano for a stunning panoramic view of the city. It takes about two hours to get to the top and you are sure to build up a pretty good appetite on your way back. However, to avoid feeling tired, have lots of energy foods before you climb up. All in all, it’s quite a fun, adventurous activity and all the hard work is totally worth it in the end.

Walk the length of the Royal Mile
The Royal Mile is a series of streets that form the main road of the Old Town of Edinburgh and runs between two historical landmarks of Scotland, from Edinburgh Castle on the top, down to Holyrood Abbey. The Royal Mile is a popular tourist spot and is filled with many cafes, bars, restaurants, hotels, and souvenir shops. When in Edinburgh, the Royal Mile is without a doubt, a must-visit.

Take a ghost tour
There are several popular ghost walks in Edinburgh, which take you to the underground streets and vaults that lie beneath the busy, public streets. Some of these are scary as hell, some rather comical, but all of them fun, nonetheless.

Enjoy the view from Calton Hill
A photographer’s delight, Calton Hill provides a superb panoramic view taking in almost the whole of Calton HillEdinburgh. An Athenian Acropolis, which in fact is an unfinished monument originally called the National Monument, is one of the main attractions at Calton Hill and makes for a stunning background for photographs. This is also an ideal spot for picnics or quiet walks, anything you fancy.

Take a tour of the Royal Yacht Britannia
A former royal yacht of Queen Elizabeth II, Royal Britannia is a must-see tourist attraction in Edinburgh’s historic port of Leith. This magnificent ship gives a rare glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the British Royal family and you’re sure to have a wonderful time on-board!

A Day trip to Loch Ness and the Highlands and a date with Nessie
The hope of spotting the Loch Ness Monster or Nessie, as it is fondly called is one of the main reasons why many people go up to the Highlands. For those who don’t think the Loch Ness monster is real, take a trip to Loch Ness and the Highlands for the immense natural beauty, which might just take your breath away.

These are only a few from a number of options of things to do and see, when visiting Edinburgh. One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Edinburgh is so compact that you can explore the entire city on foot. People in Edinburgh are extremely friendly, kind and down to earth and you will often find complete strangers exchanging greetings with you as if they have known you for ages. And a smile! A smile really costs nothing in Edinburgh.
