Melbourne is relaxed, quirky, stylish and unassuming. This is how I see my hometown, and a place I consider to be one of the best in the world, but of course, I am biased. But hey, who better to take you on a tour of what this dynamic Australian city has to offer than a true Melbournian! Looking beyond the MCG and Flinders Street Station, the real Melbourne has much more hidden in its alleyways than a tourist usually sees.
Keep Walking
The centre of Melbourne’s central business district is not large by international standards and is in a grid format, which makes it very easy to get around and almost impossible to get lost. The trick when walking around the town is not to stay on the big streets. Yes, Collins Street has some great shops, and there is always interesting street theatre on Bourke Street, but step into the small laneways off these arterial roads and experience true art culture.
Just off Flinders Street, opposite Federation Square is Hosier Lane. This rather dark alleyway is home to some of the best street art you will find. The street walls are constantly evolving, what was once considered graffiti is now a piece of living art. International and local artists are invited to add to the cobblestoned street-scape, with full creative freedom. It is like a small victory for anarchy in the middle of the city. Hosier Lane also hosts one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne, Movida, which shouldn’t be missed by anyone who enjoys classic Spanish tapas, great seafood and a smooth Rioja!
Caffeine High
If you love coffee, then you have come to the right town. No Melbournian’s day truly begins until they have had a shot of caffeine, whether it is a latte, cappuccino or macchiato. The best place to get your morning hit in town is Degraves Street. With open air seating, there is a line of funky cafes to choose from. Sip on your coffee and indulge in people watching at the same time as the office workers rush to start their day.
Dress like Melbournians do
Fashion is not just clothing in this Australian city but more like a religion. Whether it is understated style in all black or innovative design, Melbourne knows its fashion and isn’t afraid to show it. Highlighting its creative energy, the town hosts Melbourne Fashion Festival from March 18-24 this year. This international fashion festival showcases the dynamic best of Australian fashion. Catwalk shows have all the glitz of the Paris and New York counterparts, and shouldn’t be missed by anyone who is a fashion buff.
After exploring the hidden secrets of Melbourne, wind down with a quiet drink at the elegant old world bar, Siglo, located on Spring Street, opposite the Parliament Buildings. Sit on the balcony and enjoy a glass of Australia’s best wine under the cool night air.
So when visiting Melbourne, forget about the big ticket sites, and just take it easy and enjoy this town the way it was meant to be seen, at a leisurely pace with a coffee in your hand, just like a local.
